Mumbai Civic Poll Results: Mahayuti Clinches BMC, BJP–Sena Alliance Tightens Grip on Mumbai

BJP–Shiv Sena alliance leaders and supporters celebrate after Mahayuti’s sweeping victory in the Mumbai civic polls.

The Mahayuti coalition, comprising the BJP and Shiv Sena, was recognized as the undisputed victor in the closely contested elections for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which allowed them to take over India’s wealthiest municipality and deliver a significant strike against the opposition led by the reunited Thackeray cousins.

The very first polling day was January 15 which also marked the elections for 28 other municipal bodies in Maharashtra. With that, the vote counting process was initiated at 10 AM on Friday at 23 locations in Mumbai under strict security. As trends firmed up through the day, the Mahayuti alliance crossed the halfway mark in the 227-member BMC, paving the way for a BJP–Shiv Sena mayor in Mumbai.

Mahayuti’s Big Win, Opposition Setback

Through the day, the initial and midday trends gave the reflection that the BJP–Shiv Sena alliance got the lead in more than 115 wards while the alliance of Shiv Sena (UBT), Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) was trailing badly. The Congress party only managed to get a few wards, but it was a phenomenal win in Dharavi where Asha Deepak Kale defeated the Shiv Sena candidate.

It is no less than a turning point in the political landscape of Mumbai as the Mahayuti not only defeated but also altered the narrative regarding the truce of Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray. The exit polls had, earlier on, indicated a strong mandate for the ruling alliance which was later on confirmed by the counting trends.

Leaders React: Focus on Development

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with Deputy CM Eknath Shinde praised the judgment as a people’s choice for progress and stability. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari voiced that the outcomes were public trust in the NDA and would fast-track the state’s growth strategy.

“People have clearly chosen development over corruption and politics of obstruction,” Eknath Shinde said, adding that Mumbai would now move faster on infrastructure, housing and civic reforms.

Milind Deora, a leader of the Shiva Sena party, commented that the verdicts had “put a full stop to the melodrama of Mumbai politics,” arguing that the metropolis was in favor of transparency and development instead of power struggle.

Political Barbs and Celebrations

During the festivities, Nitesh Rane, the BJP politician, scoffed at the Thackerays, while the party activists in Mumbai and other places treated themselves to sweets and chanted slogans as a way of celebrating the victory. Pictures captured at Shiv Sena Bhavan and BJP offices revealed that the fans were celebrating the results as they were declared ward-wise.

Meanwhile, Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders began to issue statements about the electoral process, Rahul Gandhi claiming reduction in public trust and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut interrogating the Election Commission about what happened on polling day.

Statewide Impact

The Mahayuti coalition had a tremendous performance not just in Mumbai but also in the Maharashtra municipal corporations like Pune, Nagpur, and Pimpri-Chinchwad. BJP leaders announced the backing or leadership of the party in the majority of the 29 civic bodies that were elected, thereby confirming the ruling position of the alliance at the grassroots level once again.

The BMC, which is under Mahayuti now, is going to change the manner of civic governance in Mumbai and the scenario of Maharashtra politics in a big way ahead of state and national elections in the future.
