‘BJP Is People’s First Choice’: PM Modi Celebrates BMC Victory, Attacks Congress Over Assam

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses a public gathering in Assam after BJP’s major win in the Mumbai BMC elections.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Indian National Congress’s recent electoral victories, calling the BJP the “people’s first choice” and claiming that the party had already experienced a gradual rise for a year and a half. A dubious attack on the Congress was also made; across the accusations, the party during the ruling times in Assam had made it easy for people from outside to settle down and even get politically involved.

Modi, while addressing a large gathering in Assam, stated he was speaking about the Lok Sabha elections 2024 that came as a major setback for the BJP but now it was back stronger than ever. “The country has repeatedly shown its trust in the BJP. From state elections to civic polls, the party continues to receive historic mandates,” he said.

In a recapitulation of recent triumphs, the Prime Minister referred to the BJP’s historical performance in Bihar, its subsequent capitalizing in municipal corporation elections in all major cities. He termed the BJP’s victory in the BRIHANMUMBAI MUNICIPAL CORPORATION elections as a grand historical gain, explaining that the party had gained control of one of the largest municipal areas in the world and this was the first time. Furthermore, PM Modi mentioned increasing power of the party in Kerala, where BJP won the mayor in Thiruvananthapuram for the first time.

For Assam, PM Modi alleged the Congress party of “selling land to illegal migrants in return for votes” during its long regime in the state. He alleged that illegal immigration increased under the Congress government, leading to encroachment on forests, wildlife corridors and traditional institutions. “He stated, ‘the BJP government is determined to take strong measures against the encroachment and thereby safeguard Assam’s identity, culture and land,’ further stating that now voters have faith in BJP for governance and development.”

The Prime Minister’s remarks came right after the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition earned a massive win in the Mumbai municipal elections thus snatching BMC control from Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena faction. The coalition surpassed the majority in the 227-member body with the BJP becoming the largest party but still relying on Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena for support in important decisions.

When PM Modi was in Assam, he set the stage for the ₹6,957-crore Kaziranga Elevated Corridor which is a very important infrastructure development project meant to enable the movement of wild animals through Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve without any hindrance. It is expected that the corridor will result in fewer vehicle accidents on National Highway-715, encourage eco-tourism, and provide the locals with jobs among other benefits. The Prime Minister also reviewed a model of the project.

Also, PM Modi performed the virtual inauguration of two Amrit Bharat Express trains—Dibrugarh to Gomti Nagar (Lucknow) and Kamakhya to Rohtak—enhancing rail connection from the Northeast. His trip to Assam concluded the second day of his tour of the state which was concentrated on the promotion of development, infrastructure, and connectivity initiatives.
