Nitin Nabin formally takes charge as BJP national president at party headquarters

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulates newly elected BJP National President Nitin Nabin during his swearing-in ceremony at the party headquarters in New Delhi.

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday through a ceremony held at its headquarters in New Delhi, officially declared Nitin Nabin as its new national president.

The Prime Minister, Mr. Modi, former BJP president Nadda, and Union Ministers Singh, Shah, and Gadkari were all present to hug Mr. Nabin and share their good wishes on his assuming the highest post of party organization.

K. Laxman, the returning officer for the BJP’s organisational elections, declared the results and presented the certificate of election to Mr. Nabin, 45, making him the youngest leader to hold the post of BJP national president.

Mr. Nabin, a five-term MLA from Bihar, was elected unopposed on Monday following a day-long nomination process at the party headquarters. Mr. Laxman said that 37 sets of nomination papers were filed in his favour, all of which were found valid.

Mr. Nabin had earlier been appointed as the BJP’s national working president on December 14, after an 18-month-long search process. His promotion to the highest rank was interpreted by many as a sign of the party leadership’s trust in him as a leader.

Established in 1980, the BJP is now on its 12th national president—accidentally the same year Mr. Nabin came into the world.

Addressing party workers, Mr. Nadda described the occasion as historic. “Today, our young, energetic and talented Nitin Nabin is taking charge as the national president of the world’s largest political party. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to him on my behalf and on behalf of crores of party workers,” he said.
