The Chennai surgeon viewing the developed world and its culture of convenience and quick fixes is, instead, trying to instill a healthy motive into the ways of the lay undertakers of healthcare at their very base-the kitchen. Dr. Preethi Mrinalini, consultant laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon at the Apollo Hospitals and Marinas Clinic, shares five everyday objects she has eradicated from her domicile contemplating the long-term hazard of health.
Dr. Mrinalini shared the list under a post in December 2025 on her Instagram handle titled “Things I have banned in my house as a doctor,” disclosing clinical aspects that uphold her choices rather than passing wellness fads.
“Not out of fear, but out of science, long-term health impact, and what I’ve repeatedly seen in my patients,” she wrote.
The post drove significant conversation about the hidden health risks that result from modern modes of food and kitchen maintenance. Here are the five enemy items that the doctor advises should not exist in an awareness household.
- Packaged and Ready-to-Eat Foods
Heat and eat meals may be convenient, but Dr Mrinalini warned that such convenience is unstintingly purchased with metabolic cost. Packaged foods contain very high levels of sodium, preservatives, artificial flavours, and stabilizers.
She said, “Physique flooding with one type of food puts gastrointestinal health at considerable risk, interferes with hunger perception, and induces chronic, unregulated inflammation.”
- ACute Dietary Sugar
Sugar, though the articulated evil, fails to get the discussion from Dr. Mrinalini, who scripted clear implicationsagainst the idea of abstinence. A no-sugar plan will not just help in avoiding overall weight gain, but an increase in sugar intake may result in higher insulin levels, leading to many long-term complications. The commencement of FLD and hormonal irregularities can follow.
“Sugar influences the body by way of energy patterns, gut health, and long-term metabolic balance. Your body will miraculously lift off the floor with drastic reductions in sugar consumption.”
- Any generic or Knot Chocolate
What the surgeon said was that not all other chocolates are created equally. Inversion is formed when the cost is slashed, with an unfortunate blow on your health.
“Evenly inexpensive dark chocolates are loaded with processed junk like vegetable fats, emulsifiers, and additives instead of real cocoa, which might be another argument that dark chocolates are healthy,” Dr Mrinalini said.
- Plastic Chopping Boards
Surprisingly, the last item in the list is plastic chopping boards, as Dr Mrinalini perceives. Use of these turns your plastic into a small, fine bread, putting microplastic particles into food.
“Every cut releases microplastics into food that loves gut bacteria, upsets hormones, and causes inflammation over time,” she argued, suggesting that everyone should go for wooden or bamboo boards for a safer choice.
- Refined Vegetable Oils
“Refined oils, often labeled as ‘light’ or ‘heart-friendly,’ undergo processing with chemical extraction and extreme temperatures in factories,” Dr Mrinalini explained.
“These oils contain inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids that can disturb gut health, cause bloating, and raise the risk of chronic disease,” she said, suggesting cold-pressed oils for everyday cooking.
Little Changes, Big Gains
Said Drakesato, “People can really experience enormous benefit by removing these few items from their diet: they get better digestion, more energy, healthier skin, and everything that follows metabolic behavior.”
Drakesato said that it is better to start effecting one change at one time to make a difference, further stressing the importance of lifestyle changes that will endure anything.
