India has made a major change to the squad by dropping vice-captain Shubman Gill in a great shake-up for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The Indian cricket board, BCCI, gave the shocking decision of bringing up the scorching Ishan Kishan, who has already scored 517 runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and was the top scorer among the batters, to the first-ranked batter and thus the cricket world was left speechless. This reshuffle also opened up Rinku Singh, a T20I player who has not been in the squad for a long time, as a possible inclusion among the ranks. Consequently, the Indian wicketkeeper of the last series Jitesh Sharma and the holder of the No. 1 rank have been left out.
While Gill’s leaving the team, Axar Patel has been crowned the vice-captain of the fifteen-member unit. The players constituting the squad are not only those accustomed to the international game but also some inexperienced ones, and among them still, there are surprises. The Indian cricket team has Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana as its premier pace bowlers alongside the spin quartet of Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar.
The Indian cricket team under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav presents a solid and strong middle order backed by the all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube, with the inclusion of Tilak Varma and Rinku Singh; meanwhile, the other section of the squad consists of opener Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan as wicketkeepers.
The squad will select five players for the next five-match T20I series with New Zealand.
India will participate in the tournament as the reigning champion because they secured the T20 World Cup 2024 title by defeating South Africa in the final and as a result, they retained their championship.
